Sad thoughts, and doubtless many happy memories. A close friend lost her beloved old labrador recently, and I think I may lose my furry companion any day now too. They give us so much.

Thank you so much, Olga. Yes, it's hard to say good-bye, but our old lad was almost 16 and his legs just gave way on him. We decided the kindest thing was to let him go, and the vet agreed. As you say, they give us so much and, in the end, we should spare them suffering.

This is the first time in over 40 years I've been without a dog and it's really hard to get used to a dog-less house. But we're now looking at the possibility of 'rescuing'a 7-month old yellow labrador who needs to be re-homed. Watch this space!
Please let me know about your own pet - I shall know exactly how you will feel. I THINK I've done weeping now - day 6 - but.......

Hunter looks like such a contemplative dog in this photo. I'd tell you the story of the Welsh prince and his dog but I think it would depress you some more. Whatever you do, don't read 'The Leopard' just yet...

Oh, go on, Billo. Tell me the story of ther Welsh prince and his dog. I can take it now.

Contemplative? Yes, in his old age. As a young dog he was more apt to be contemplating duffing up any younger, weaker canine he met up with!
